SATINAL is the name of a product created at the end of the 1960s by Lucchini brothers, the owners of a small company supplying raw materials for the glass industry in the area of Milan. The name comes from ‘satin’ – as in silk satin, a textile with a surface particularly pleasing to the touch – and the first letters of the inventors’ names.

Developed nearly a century before, the glass frosting process had become particularly popular in Italy and France, where the glass industry – in close connection with lighting, cosmetics and beverage manufacturing – could boast a consolidated tradition.

At the time, ready-made compounds were not available on the market. So, companies specialized in glass frosting had to produce frosting chemicals by themselves. That would very often result in lack of quality standards and, above all, security risks.

Lucchini brothers’ intuition consisted in formulating a high-quality pre-mixed recipe packed in appropriate bags to facilitate both handling and shipping, and to ensure high quality standards. In time, evolving market conditions and increasingly strict rules on security and health have led to a thorough innovation of the product, with substantial investments in state-of-the-art equipment and qualified human resources.
