STRATO® EVA products obtain EPD as the most sustainable films on the market

Satinal publishes the Environmental Product Declaration for STRATO® glass interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV encapsulants

Satinal, an Italian manufacturer of interlayers for safety glass lamination, has published its EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for both STRATO® Glass Interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV encapsulants. The EPD states that STRATO® has the most sustainable products on the market within its category.

This prestigious declaration, validated by the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, testifies to Satinal’s continuous commitment to providing the construction and solar sectors with products that are not only high-performing, but also environmentally sustainable.

What is an EPD?

The EPD has global validity and provides the results of cradle-to-gate potential environmental impact indicators used in Europe and North America for a declared unit of 1 sqm. This translates into greater decision-making ability, allowing the choice of materials with a clear understanding of their environmental footprint and ultimately contributing to more sustainable building projects and designs.

These results were achieved thanks to a European supply chain that Satinal has developed over more than ten years of activity in the sector, combined with strong relationships established with chemical companies and international suppliers.

Understanding environmental impact: EPD and HPD data

The EPD also provides crucial data on the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the products. The cradle-to-gate GWP results for the 0.38 mm STRATO® EVA interlayer equal 0.953E0 kg CO₂ eq./m².

This data demonstrates Satinal’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact. In fact, this exclusive result confirms STRATO® as the most sustainable interlayer on the market.

GWP impact comparison table (0.76 mm thickness)

Product Lifecycle stage GWP-total (kg CO₂ eq. /m²) Thickness (mm) GWP-total (kg CO₂ eq. /kg)

Contributing to LEED: a holistic approach

In essence, the verified HPD (Health Product Declaration) and EPD are not simple documents; they are powerful tools that translate directly into significant contributions toward achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for sustainable building construction. By choosing STRATO® products, customers opt for solutions rigorously evaluated based on their environmental performance.

STRATO® Interlayers: innovation serving architects, designers, and builders

The certified STRATO® Glass Interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV products are the core of Satinal’s business, crafted with precision and care at the headquarters in Erba (Como), designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern architectural and solar applications. STRATO® Glass Interlayers are EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) films used in architectural safety laminated glass. EVA films must be inserted between two or more sheets of glass and laminated through a heat and pressure process: this process creates safety laminated glass, a product renowned for its exceptional strength, safety, and versatility.

Key features and benefits of STRATO® glass interlayers

  • Safety and protection: they offer superior impact resistance, making laminated glass the ideal choice for applications where personal safety is paramount, such as balustrades, overhead glazing, and public access areas. In case of breakage, glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, maintaining the integrity of the sheet.
  • Acoustic insulation: they have excellent acoustic properties, effectively reducing noise transmission through the glass. This makes them essential for buildings in urban settings, near airports, or wherever acoustic comfort is required.
  • UV protection: they filter out a high percentage of harmful UV radiation, protecting interior furnishings, artwork, and occupants while allowing visible light to pass through.
  • Design flexibility: STRATO® EVA interlayers are available in various colours and transparencies, offering maximum design freedom.
  • Structural integrity: laminated glass can contribute to the structural integrity of a building by offering greater resistance.
  • Durability and longevity: they are designed for long-term performance, resisting delamination and yellowing while maintaining optical clarity even in harsh environmental conditions.

Typical applications

  • Building glass facades: ensure safety, thermal performance, and aesthetic appeal for skyscrapers and contemporary structures.
  • Balustrades and railings: provide safety barriers with an unobstructed view.
  • Windows and doors: enhance security, acoustic insulation, and UV protection.
  • Interior partitions: separate spaces while maintaining transparency, acoustic control, and safety.
  • Security glazing: for applications requiring increased resistance against vandalism, forced entry attempts, or ballistic impacts.

STRATO® Solar PV: empowering renewable energy solutions

STRATO® Solar PV encapsulants are polymeric films designed to encapsulate and protect photovoltaic cells inside solar modules. These films play a critical role in the performance and durability of solar panels, providing electrical insulation and adhesion between the various layers of the module.

Key features and benefits

  • High transparency and UV resistance: light transmittance to maximize photovoltaic cell efficiency while providing superior resistance to UV degradation, preventing yellowing, and keeping performance unchanged throughout the module’s life cycle.
  • Adhesion: between glass, solar cells, and backsheet, preventing delamination and guaranteeing the structural integrity of the solar module.
  • Moisture barrier: against PID (Potential-Induced Degradation), extending panel lifespan.

Typical applications

  • BIPV: integration of solar modules into building facades, roofs, and skylights, combining design and functionality.
  • Standard PV modules: ensure long-term reliability and efficiency for traditional solar panels used in ground-mounted and rooftop installations.
