Satinal: how STRATO® can contribute to stem the global warming

It is well known that climate change refers both to long-term natural and man’s hand shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main drivers of climate change and Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

As human being are the main culprits of the warning global warming, they should take to heart the global issue and implement resolutive actions. According to the European Commission, “…as every tonne of CO2 emitted contributes to global warming, all emissions reductions contribute to slowing it down. In order to stop global warming completely, CO2 emissions have to reach net zero worldwide. In addition, reducing emissions of other greenhouse gases, such as methane, can also have a powerful effect on slowing global warming – especially in the short term”.

The looming climate emergency has been urgently demanding a strong turnover. Many companies have been adopting a positive impact and a responsible approach within their supply chain, taking decisive steps towards a brighter, greener future, leading to an ecological renewal of market dynamics.
In this scenario STRATO® has, de-facto, adopted a sensitive approach and has been investing in transformative next-generation technologies to achieve net-zero.

Recently STRATO® has been object of in-depth analysis aiming to assess the environmental profile of its product range, in terms of CO2 impact, considering life cycle of the materials and secondary products involved.

STRATO® obtained the ISCC PLUS certification with a score of 1,13 [kg CO2 eq], thanks to its STRATO® Carbon free product range. With 1.13, the environmental profile of STRATO® is a reference score for developing a road map toward zero-carbon aspirations in 2050. The challenge is to create a sustainable option for customers who would buy responsibly with a look to the global warning impact.

Above all, STRATO® has designed a wide range of products that mainly run on a double track:

  1. Performance: control of the UV-rays and NIR energy from the outside to the inside of buildings
  2. Sustainable: contribution in reducing the impact of CO2 emissions

Concernig the first point, STRATO® EVA is a thermosetting material that creates three-dimensional bonds at molecular level during the lamination process. This notable feature makes STRATO® EVA film not sensitive to humidity, water and in particular to unforseen weather conditions, a direct consequence of the climate change so far.
STRATO® FRESCO is an innovative high-performance EVA film belonging to STRATO® SOLAR CONTROL product range. It reduces UV and NIR energy allowing the highest visible light transmission. A new generation of high-perfomance EVA film that uses the nanoparticle technology. It has been formulated to give efficient solar control properties to laminated safety glass. STRATO® FRESCO can replace low-emission glass because it reduces the heat transmission.

The second point is related to STRATO® FRESCO being specifically formulated to provide exceptional durability when exposed to weather conditions and great sound insulation. It significantly reduces energy costs and CO2 impacts by controlling solar heat energy.
In simple terms, if we analyse the behaviour of a laminated glass with one or more STRATO® FRESCO EVA sheets we will notice that the value of the transmission of the visible light is opposite to that of the infrared rays. A great performance of STRATO® FRESCO EVA films that let a comfortable indoor environment. By reducing the use of air conditioning, customers will get economic benefits – like reduction of electricity costs – and also environmental reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

STRATO® has been paving the way to a new generation of green products that aims at an innovative path toward the limitation of GHG emissions. A tool to achieve the 2050 net zero goals and, hopefully, a motivation to others to implement similar solutions in their manufacturing strategies.

Satinal: STRATO® RIGIDO structural component for multiple combinations

STRATO® RIGIDO is a special structural interlayer that ensures one of the highest levels of protection against strong impacts. Even if the glass component breaks, the laminated structure is not weakened, so the stability and safety of the product are preserved.
STRATO® RIGIDO must be laminated with two sheets of STRATO® EVA film, so the mechanical, adhesive and optical properties can be achieved.

STRATO® EVA, that ensures the adhesion of STRATO® RIGIDO to glasses, is a thermosetting material. Differently from PVB film, it creates three-dimensional bonds at molecular level during the lamination process, making STRATO® EVA laminated structurally safe.

The great mechanical properties of STRATO® EVA combined with the stiffness of STRATO® RIGIDO allow to laminate any thickness of glass, guaranteeing the same structural loading any time and over time.

Open edges applications

STRATO® RIGIDO is not a hygroscopic material and therefore does not fear moisture. Moreover, STRATO® EVA film is not sensitive to humidity, water, temperature fluctuations and more: that is why STRATO® product range is compatible with indoor as well as outdoor applications without the risk of delamination. So, no worry to install STRATO® EVA laminated glasses at the most extreme weathers.

Transparency and frosting effect

When transparency comes as a dictat, it is recommended to laminate STRATO® RIGIDO with two sheets of STRATO® CLEAR EVA film, known as the non-plus-ultra of EVA films for the architectural glass market. It provides a completely natural, transparent and neutral-looking glass thanks to its high degree of transparency and UV protection.

If privacy is a must, STRATO® RIGIDO can be combined with STRATO® FROST EVA film product range, consisting of three different finishings (STRATO® LEGGERO, STRATO® SATINATO and STRATO® LATTE). It allows to achieve different levels of opaque effects and transparencies (from 2% up to 65% of light transmission) according to STRATO® FROST EVA film finishing chosed. It also plays a double action, capturing and spreading the light homogeneously and without reflections.

Integrate Colours

STRATO® RIGIDO can be assembled with STRATO® Colour EVA film, matching colourful and safety all in one project.
STRATO® COLOUR EVA film collection offers both solid and transparent colours, allowing the personalization of structural surfaces with modern and cutting-edge shades.

It is also possible to combine STRATO® COLOUR EVA film with STRATO® RIGIDO and STRATO® FROST EVA film, all together in one laminated glass, for a perfect colour-frosted finishing.

Multilayer combinations: what does it mean?

Safety and stiffness are mandatory when it comes to project buildings, canopes, ceilings, floors, facades and more. It is clear that the combination of safety and styling is definitely possible with STRATO® product range.
STRATO® RIGIDO must be assembled inside two sheets of STRATO® EVA and two panes of glasses, but multiple combinations are still possible.

Here below are two infographic examples that easily explain how panes of glass can be combined with multiple sheets of STRATO® RIGIDO and STRATO® EVA films, meeting the approval of architectural guidelines in terms of structural safety.

STRATO® EVA Interlayers: noise reduction, safety and aesthetics

Interlayers for laminated glass with high sound insulation

What is the acoustic comfort?

Acoustic comfort is the well-being condition of an individual within a sound field. An acoustically comfortable environment does not present any underlying disturbances that prevent concentration on daily activities, such as office work or a conversation.

The noise level is measured in decibels (dB): on average, a comfortable noise level is about 35dB during the day and 30db during the night.

Architecture and acoustic insulation

Acoustic comfort is a fundamental component of everyday life and must therefore be taken into account in every design project, identifying possible sources of noise inside or outside the environment and ensuring proper sound insulation of buildings and structures.

It is essential to ensure proper sound insulation selecting sound-absorbing materials and systems able to reduce noise pollution.

Glass is an effective barrier against external noise, allowing people to live in a quiet environment. It reduces the harmful effects of noise and it is particularly effective in buildings near roads, railway stations and airports.

In order to optimise the acoustic comfort of buildings, laminated glass plays a key role. STRATO® EVA Interlayers are 100% made in Italy products of the highest quality with excellent acoustic performance. Laminated glass with STRATO® EVA films offer a double advantage: a better insulation of buildings from external noise and containment of sound waves from the inside out.

Sound insulation is the ideal solution to improve private and professional comfort, reducing the stress factors generated by noise pollution and increasing quality of life.

A sound insulated glass consists of two glasses coupled and laminated with STRATO® EVA, to reduce the propagation of sound between different environments. A STRATO® EVA laminated glass absorbs and weakens the sound energy and acts as a barrier against noise.

STRATO® EVA laminated glass: acoustic insulation, safety and design

STRATO® EVA laminated glass offers also high levels of safety to buildings. They provide high protection against heavy impacts: the laminated structure is not weakened even in the event of glass component breakage, thus preserving the stability and safety of the product.

The wide range of STRATO® EVA interlayers offers multiple design opportunities. For instance, a special merit goes to STRATO® EVA COLOUR range, that provides high acoustic insulation, safety properties and the possibility to customize buildings with a glamour contemporary style.

STRATO® EVA acoustic insulation: certified laboratory analysis

An external laboratory has certified levels of acoustic insulations provided by a STRATO® EVA laminated glass, according to the following standards:

  • EN ISO 10140-1:2016 Acoustics. Laboratory measurements of the sound insulation of building elements
  • EN ISO 10140-2:2012 Measurements of the sound insulation of building elements
  • EN ISO 717-1:2013 Assessments of sound insulation in buildings and its elements

Tests provided a classification of the acoustic performance of different thickness of STRATO® EVA laminated glasses. The results confirmed outstanding levels of sound insulation, even in case of STRATO® EVA laminated thinner glasses.

STRATO® EVA Carbon free: sustainable interlayers

STRATO® EVA range is also carbon free version available, an innovative portfolio of highly innovative interlayers produced in Italy through a completely sustainable raw material supply chain and an eco-friendly production process.

In 2022 STRATO® achieved the ISCC+ certification (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), thanks to STRATO® proves itself to be an innovative and ever-growing brand, committed every day to guarantee premium quality standards (discover more).

Topics: sound insulation of SRATO® EVA laminated glasses

  • STRATO® EVA laminated glass offers excellent acoustic insulation, high level of security and aesthetic opportunities
  • STRATO® EVA can be combined with different thickness of glass, without compromising acoustic comfort and security of the surface
  • STRATO® EVA range is also available in carbon free version.

Satinal SpA has been the first EVA film production site in Italy, a reference point in Europe for the supply of 100% made in Italy STRATO® EVA interlayers.

The application of STRATO® EVA film is a process requiring great precision for the applied temperatures and cycle times. The quality controls, which are carried out in Satinal’s R&D Lab, aim to guarantee perfect adhesion of the material to the glass surface. The deep experience acquired by Satinal in the treatment of EVA-based materials is essential to master its potential applications and fully exploit their characteristics.

Chemically tempered glass for the nautical sector: SATINAL launches the first third-party production

Boat windshield made in Italy

SATINAL, the innovation-driven Italian company operating worldwide to deliver advanced solutions for safety glass manufacture, launches the first third-party production of chemically tempered glass for the nautical sector.

Chemical temper advantages and properties

The Chemical tempering of glass is obtained by immersing the glasses to be treated in a bath of molten salts of potassium nitrate at temperatures higher than 400°C. The potassium ions (K+), contained in the salt, replace the sodium ions (Na+) inside the glass, resulting in the establishment of compression tensions over the entire surface and over the edges.

The properties of mechanical resistance to bending of a chemically tempered glass are up to 6 times higher than those of a thermally tempered glass, subjected to the same force. This particular production process, as consequence of the surface compression, increases the impact and scratch resistance.

Learn about the chemical temper process explained by Prof. Vincenzo Maria Sglavo, Full Professor of Glass Science and Technology (Department of Industrial Engineering – University of Trento) and Satinal Scientific Consultant.

The TK Chemical Temper oven is installed at Satinal headquarters and the first third-party production already started: glass with a thickness of 2 mm each, chemically tempered to be then used as a windshield in the nautical field.

After this process, the glasses were laminated using STRATO® Fresco, the EVA interlayer with solar heat control properties: it absorbs UV and NIR energy allowing the highest visible light transmission and efficient solar control. It is specifically formulated to provide thermal insulation and exceptional durability when exposed to natural weathering; it also provides excellent acoustic insulation performance.

SATINAL – Bresciani family activity in the glass industry is 100 years old

The birth and origins of the activity: from 1921 to the second post-war period

The Bresciani family activity was born in the 1920s when the glass world meets a great history of tradition and values. It is in 1921 when Luigi Bresciani begins working in an artisan workshop in Milan; suddenly the owner dies and Luigi take over the entire business which subsequently passes to his son Ferruccio.

The first industrial process, crystal glass flattening, however, dates back to the’30s: at that time glass was handcrafted and the two faces that composed it were never regular; this characteristic did not make it suitable for mirrors production because they would have deformed the image. Ferruccio then starts to flatten glass with some abrasive machines to make sure that glass sheet had two regular faces, to produce good quality mirrors.

The Second World War begins and right at the end Ferruccio dies. The sons Antonio and Luigi Bresciani, in their early twenties, take on the responsibility of the activities. They begin to produce mirrors for the furniture industry that was born in Brianza. It is a period of rebirth and reconstruction in which everything, however, is still made in an artisanal way.

Glass processing industrialization

At this point Antonio leaves for the United States and purchases a plant for the automatic industrial production of mirrors, the first in Europe. This led to a major development of the activity thanks to an increase in production capacity and a sales prices reduction. This success continues until the end of the 60s when multinational glass manufacturers begin to offer, in addition to transparent glass (made with the first modern systems called “Float”), also the first processed ones, such as mirrors. This leads to a deep crisis in which many, if not all, small mirror manufacturers have to rethink their business, including Antonio and Luigi.

But Antonio does not give up: the new idea is to work the glass sheets with very aggressive acids to obtain new textures and decorative glass. The first years are very difficult but in the mid-70s the activity grows in a remarkable way. In the 90s his sons, Alfredo and Ferruccio Bresciani, take over and subsequently set up a new company for the production of decorative acid-etched glass, becoming world leader. In 2001 Satinal spa was born, at that time belonging to the same group, specialized in the production of chemical compounds for glass frosting.

The new millennium: TK, STRATO® and international success

In 2011, Alfredo founds the new Satinal-TK group, which also includes a new business in the field of furnaces and machinery for safety glass manufacture, promoting its commercial expansion in international markets (discover TK brand glass machinery).

Starting from 2017, the new generational change also takes place and Alfredo’s sons, Luca and Marco, found STRATO®, the first production line of safety glass interlayers in Italy, quickly establishing himself as a technology and market leader in films for safety glass lamination (discover more about STRATO® technology).

During these 100 years, the development of industrial processes and activities that offer support to glass processors has never changed. Reliability, experience, customer satisfaction and innovation have always been the values on which the Bresciani family is founded.

The importance of sharing the entire experience with the customer always allowed Satinal to be a partner for glass factories, providing high quality products and technical service.

STRATO® CERTIFIED MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

THE FIRST AND ONLY EVA INTERLAYER CERTIFIED BY MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Satinal is proud to announce that STRATO® interlayer is now the first EVA film approved for use in Dade County Florida and meets its toughest standards: STRATO® has passed the weathering and flammability requirements that have been set and mandated by Dade County Florida to allow the sale of the product in the windborne debris zone.

STRATO® is the first and only EVA film which received the Notice of Acceptance (NOA) approval. Before buying a product, glaziers and system designers should check that the interlayer has been truly certified. In this specific case, it is possible to search the Miami Dade’s database for products, certificates and listings that have been approved complying with the Florida Building Code, including the High Velocity Hurricane Zone.

The sample of laminated glass (33.1) with STRATO® EVA interlayer successfully passed the following tests:

  • ASTM G155-13 | Xenon weathering
  • ASTM D638-14 | Tensile strength
  • ASTM D1929-10 | Self ignition temperature
  • ASTM D2843-10 | Average Smoke density
  • ASTM D635-10 | Average liner burning rate – Average extent of burning – Average smoke density

Damage to glazing systems can be prevented, or at least minimized, by using glazing that have been designed to resist wind and windborne debris forces specified in the building code. Impact-resistant systems provide protection through the use of laminated glass with STRATO® EVA interlayer. As a result, architects now have the option of using an advanced high-quality glazing system in hurricane applications or other areas (interior or exterior).

Satinal continues to invest in quality in order to offer the market a product that can be safely used in a variety of applications and in compliance with the different building codes: STRATO® is now certified according to European (UNI EN ISO), American (SGCC – ANSI) and Miami Dade (ASTM) standards.

The service offered by Satinal allows its customers to save production costs up to 50% thanks to the reduction of production waste.

This also makes it possible to reduce the environmental impact of plastic material discarded for sizing reasons not suitable for the glazier’s needs.

Satinal provides more cutting solutions, offering also a tailor-made service: Satinal’s customers can request to cut the EVA STRATO® film in specific dimensions, according to the type of product they need to realize.

The whole line of EVA STRATO® film is produced in Erba (Italy, CO): the in-house production guarantees to the customer the respect of high quality standards and a careful control of each steps of the process.

The internal quality control allows the traceability of all production batches delivered to the customer, guaranteeing the possibility to carry out a double quality control in case of problems occurring after the lamination.

Another advantage is the easy availability of STRATO®, which is an essential requirement for a reliable and regular production process carried out by the end customer.

Producing in Italy, an important commercial crossroads in Europe, means short delivery times for the final customer.

Satinal is also able to manage the last-minute urgency, organizing fast shipments all over the country and abroad.

The presence of its own warehouses and offices in North America, South America and the Middle East facilitates a wider distribution of the material.

Therefore, glass professionals have the guarantee of an easily and constantly accessible product, overcoming the stock shortage problem.

STRATO® is synonymous of reliability and quality: it is the safest choice for laminated safety glass production.

The risk, however, is that there will be problems in terms of living comfort, because it is possible that the interiors, with greater exposure to the sun, might overheat, especially during the summer season.

Solar control is therefore essential to ensure a comfortable indoor temperature and is also important for energy saving.

It is for this reason that Satinal has developed STRATO® FRESCO, a new generation of high performance EVA film using nanoparticle technology.

FRESCO is designed to give laminated glass more efficient solar heat control properties than monolithic transparent glass and laminates with traditional transparent EVA film: the film absorbs UV rays and infrared energy (NIR), allowing maximum visible light transmission.

The graphic clearly shows this concept: a laminated glass with EVA film without protection

UV-IR (yellow line), has a high transmission of visible light but allows to pass both UV rays,

very harmful to people and objects, and Infrared rays.

Click on the chart to enlarge

However, if we analyse the behaviour of a laminated glass with one (blue line), two (line orange), or three films (grey line) of STRATO® FRESCO, you will notice that the value of the transmission of the visible light (max 80%), is opposite to that of the infrared rays (min. 5%).

These characteristics are very important because they let you recreate in buildings, houses and apartments, a comfortable indoor environment, especially during the summer season.

By reducing the use of air conditioning, you will get economic benefits – reduction of electricity costs – and also environmental – reduction of greenhouse gas emissions-.

STRATO® QUALITY EVA FILM

This first quarter of 2020 has been quite an important time for Satinal, as it has announced the introduction of its most recent new product – STRATO® PLUS, developed entirely in-house and tested throughout 2019.

The R&D department of the Satinal has always been an essential component of the success of STRATO®. In fact, the DNA of the STRATO® brand has been built on the scientific background and know-how of Satinal’s technicians.

The Satinal’s goal is not only to make a Made in Italy EVA film that guarantees easy product tracing and consistent quality, but also to make it state-of-the-art.

A new thermosetting and transparent product

The S-Lab in-house laboratory is made up of a team of specialists who develop and evaluate new formulas to make high quality products, which can meet the changing needs of the market. As a result, Satinal has formulated a new thermosetting and transparent product, STRATO® PLUS: the Non-Plus-Ultra of EVA films for the architectural glass market.

Top quality, higher than any other product on the market, is the key feature of this new product. STRATO® PLUS meets the needs of customers identified during the production and marketing of the other products included in the STRATO® range.

During 2019, Satinal’s Research & Development department was dedicated to the formulation of this new product, as well as to its detailed technical evaluation in order to ensure its best performance on the market.

STRATO® PLUS vs STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO

On one hand, STRATO® PLUS has a higher degree of smoothness and elasticity than STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO: this allows the customers to laminate special inserts such as LCD (Smart Glass), PET or fabrics without problems of distortions or air bubbles ensuring, at the same time, the highest degree of transparency even with low temperature lamination.

On the other hand, STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO is the most stiff EVA film on the market and is the perfect solution for applications that require high levels of stiffness and impact resistance.

The higher stiffness of STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO also minimizes the EVA leakage from the edges of the glass during the lamination process, allowing easier cleaning after lamination.

Noise reduction

STRATO® PLUS and STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO provide excellent noise reduction properties and, on request, Satinal shares the detailed sound performance data of laminated glass with STRATO® product range (obtained from certified external laboratories). They are both suitable for outdoor applications as well as for interior design, thanks to their resistance to UV rays and weathering, which can instead damage other products that are similar to STRATO® but with a lower quality, causing unwanted yellowing effects.

STRATO® PLUS has a UV cut of at 360 nm compared to the traditional STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO that blocks 100 per cent UV rays up to 385 nm. This feature allows to achieve a higher degree of clarity in order to satisfy the requirement of having a completely natural and neutral looking glass.

ISO 9001 certification

Another important goal for Satinal is the achievement of ISO 9001 certification which demonstrates its commitment to constantly guaranteeing the highest quality products on the market. Satinal started all the activities of standardization and finalisation of the in-house production processes in January 2020, with the aim of achieving the certification by the end of the year.

Satinal collects a sample of each item produced and delivered to customers in order to promptly check any problems encountered by the end user. This allows to make double quality checks and to establish the true causes of post-laminating problems should they occur. Furthermore, the strict quality controls during the production process ensure the provision of high-quality products in compliance with the standards required.

Colours, solar control and maximum widths

With the launch of STRATO® PLUS, in addition to the rest of the STRATO® colour range and STRATO® FRESCO – the first and only solar control EVA film on the market – Satinal confirms itself as the only company in the world that is able to produce and offer to the market a wide range of EVA film which can satisfy all customers needs and which can be used in different applications. STRATO® is also the only EVA film available with a maximum width of 2,600 mm (102 inches).

In the S-LAB department, Satinal develops technical tests related to processing methods, and testing of mechanical performances according to the reference standards, in addition to chemical studies and formulations of new products.

Collaboration with furnace manufacturers

With the help of TK’s consolidated experience in the construction of furnaces, Satinal has studied laminating cycles with specific temperatures and times, suitable for the whole STRATO® product range. As a consequence, STRATO® PLUS also follows well-established laminating recipes, but it has the peculiarity of being processed even at low temperatures, which are essential for the production of special products such as Smart Glass (LCD), ensuring a high level of transparency.

Satinal makes its know-how available to all customers and offers assistance to professionals in the glass sector, both in selecting the most suitable type of EVA film and in the laminating cycle to be applied.

In-house testing for customers

Satinal’s customers can also request to carry out tests in the in-house S-Lab, such as resistance to high temperatures and humidity, impact tests (according to the requirements of UNI EN ISO 12543, 12600, 356, etc.), light transmission tests, glass adhesion tests, cross-linking tests, etc.

These tests can be carried out on samples of laminated glass with STRATO® or with the addition of inserts, and they are useful for a first compatibility and resistance evaluation.

STRATO® BIRD FRIENDLY ANTI-COLLISION

THE FIRST ANTI-COLLISION EVA FILM TO PROTECT BIRDS

Satinal produces in Italy the first anti-collision EVA film for bird-friendly applications thanks to the development of its own exclusive extrusion technology.

STRATO® Bird Friendly is the first innovative and unique EVA interlayer on the market: it makes it possible to obtain a laminated safety glass characterized by lines, dots or patterns, recognizable by birds that, consequently, will avoid colliding against the glass.

Satinal has created the design of these effective patterns in its R&D Laboratory, based on studies carried out by international Associations and Laboratories that have been analysing the flight and behaviour of birds for several years. Some tests have shown that birds avoid flying through horizontal spaces less than 2″ (5 cm) high or through vertical spaces 4″ (10 cm) wide or less.

These guidelines are commonly known as the “2×4 rule”, but actually there are exceptions resulting from research conducted on specific species.

This new range of EVA interlayers, has been designed by Satinal with the aim to raise awareness of designers, glaziers, architects etc. by encouraging them to use the right tools to reduce the problem.

Laminated glass with STRATO® Bird Friendly EVA interlayers will not only limit bird collisions, but will also provide several advantages:

  • Benefit 100% of the advantages given by laminated safety glass with EVA film
  • Buy the quantity needed for a specific project (no minimum order quantity)
  • Any customed size available at no extra cost
  • Incredible cost savings production using standard float glass for lamination
  • Avoid expensive stocks of big quantities of non-standard float glass
  • Customize the EVA film with the pattern requested by the designer or architects
  • Combine the Bird Friendly line with other STRATO® products to create glasses with additional benefits (e.g. solar control)
  • High visible light transmission
  • High weather resistance due to the properties of STRATO® EVA film
  • Visual continuum (selected patterns do not disturb the view)
  • Full protection against UV rays

There are many factors that affect the selection of a product that makes glass bird safe: by choosing an interlayer from the STRATO® Bird Friendly collection to laminate the glass, its transparency and reflection can be reduced.

Birds do not recognize glass as an obstacle because it is a transparent and reflective material.

Transparency, sometimes, can be a problem even for man: in fact, it happens not to notice the presence of a door or a glass wall. However, man is able to recognize details such as handles, uprights and fixtures, thus avoiding collision.

Unfortunately, birds do not have this kind of perception and they are also attracted by plants, food, water etc. placed inside or outside the rooms that they see through glass.

Another aspect, in addition to transparency, is the reflection of light: depending on how and where the glass element is positioned – for example in relation to the sun, the surrounding environment, internal light levels etc. – it can look like a dark passage that birds might mistakenly see as a usual space between branches and leaves. Moreover, glass can act as a mirror: reflecting the sky, clouds or vegetation around buildings, it attracts birds and this effect is the most frequent trigger of the impact.

With STRATO® Bird Friendly you can get a product created by humans but designed for nature, without sacrificing its aesthetic appeal.

THE MAXIMUM ACOUSTIC COMFORT WITH STRATO® EVA INTERLAYERS

The complete range of STRATO® EVA interlayers is characterized by its excellent sound insulation properties. This makes it possible to produce laminated glass with higher performance than other interlayers on the market, minimizing the weight of the glass structure and maximizing the acoustic comfort of the environment.

In both residential and commercial environments, it is good to pay a lot of attention to the design of glass elements because they play a key role.

A laminated glass with STRATO® EVA film is able to ensure acoustic insulation of both the internal environment from external noise (e.g. building windows) and the external environment from internal noise (e.g. open-plan meeting rooms).

The study and implementation of the technological solutions adopted by Satinal for the production of the STRATO® EVA interlayer have led to a significant improvement in the technical performance of the range. In fact, it is possible to obtain an important reduction in noise exposure in the private and professional environment, so as to improve the level of personal comfort.

The noise reduction performance depends on the type of interlayer/glass assembly used, which will have to be adapted according to requirements.

Noise is an acoustic sound that causes an unpleasant, annoying or intolerable sensation. It could become an important stress factor, causing difficulties in communication, reduced concentration, irritation, sleep disturbances, etc.

The logarithmic scale or level scale is used to measure sound and the measurement is expressed in decibels (dB). The range of sounds is between 0 and 130 dB and the various levels correspond indicatively to:

0 dB – absolute silence

18 to 20 dB – barely audible

40 to 50 dB – normal conversation

60 to 70 dB – road traffic

from 90 to 100 dB – jackhammer

Over 100 and up to 130 dB can be assimilated to aircraft noise; in this range the sound is unbearable and even painful.

In an external Laboratory, Satinal commissioned specific tests on samples of laminated glass with STRATO® EVA film in different thicknesses. The tests were carried out according to European standards:

– EN ISO 10140-1:2016 Acoustics – Laboratory measurements of sound insulation of building elements – Part 1: application rules for specific products

– EN ISO 10140-2:2010 Acoustics – Laboratory measurements of sound insulation of building elements – Part 2: measurement of airborne insulation

– EN ISO 717-1:2013 Acoustics – Rating of sound insulation in buildings and buildings elements – Part 1: Airborne sound insulation

Satinal continues to invest in product certifications in order to further increase the quality value of STRATO® and offer its customers additional reliability.

Customers can contact the Satinal Customer Service Department (customer@satinal.it) to request the report of the results achieved.

STRATO® EVA INTERLAYERS MEET EN 16613:2019 STANDARD

In December 2019, standards EN 16612 and EN 16613 were designed and published and they are closely related to each other: in fact, the first one determines the resistance of glass panes to lateral loads by calculation, while the second one specifies the mechanical properties of the interlayer used to make laminated safety glass.

These standards have been under construction for years and their issue finally formalizes the importance of the choice of the interlayer for the design of architectural elements. Therefore, they will replace or complete the individual regulations in the different European Union countries.

Selecting the type of film to be used is a very important decision: it determines the behaviour of laminated glass, whose properties depend on the temperature and the loads to which it is subjected.

Many samples (quantities and measurements as per Appendix B of EN 16613) have been tested in an independent certified laboratory in accordance with the configuration provided by ISO EN1288-3:2016 (4-point bending test), in order to define the characteristics of STRATO® EVA film.

Tests were carried out with the aim of calculating the values of the Young Modulus and the Shear Modulus which express the behaviour of the laminated glass under different types of loads and which determine the stiffness family (type 0.1.2) of the interlayer per load condition.

Following there are some conditions listed in EN 16613: wind gust load, wind storm load, balustrade loads, climatic loads on insulating glass units etc.

EXTRA CLEAR LAMINATED GLASS FOR THE MAXIMUM PROTECTION AGAINST UV RAYS

In residential or commercial applications, laminated glass with EVA STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO is the best solution to an underestimated problem: the transmission of UV rays.

What are UV rays?

They are a form of radiation invisible to the human eye. They represent the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum located between X-rays and visible light and they have a wavelength between 100 – 400 nm.

The UV energy of the sun is divided into three categories:

  • UV(C) has the shortest wavelenght (100-280 nm) and is the most harmful but fortunately it is mostly blocked by the earth’s atmosphere
  • UV(B) is the next shortest wavelenght (280-315 nm) and it is mostly blocked by traditional float glass that is used to make Windows
  • UV(A) has a wavelenght between 315 – 400 nm and it is tipically given most attention in glazing systems. This radiation occurs all year round no matter what season it is and they represent about 95% of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth’s surface. They are harmful to people but they are also the main cause of discoloration of furniture and furnishings or degradation of goods on display.

At home or in the office you could still be exposed to UV rays, in fact the glass surfaces allow the passage of light, heat and sunlight.

To minimize the risk caused by UV exposure, we suggest to use glass laminated with EVA film STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO. The insertion of this interlayer between two panes of glass guarantees the maximum protection from UV rays, blocking over 99% of their transmission while maintaining high light transmission (> 90%). It is also highly performing in terms of resistance and safety.

WHY IS CROSS LINKING IMPORTANT

Cross-linking is the general term for the process of forming covalent chemical bonds to join two polymer chains together. The term “curing” refers to the crosslinking of the thermosetting copolymer.

STRATO® EVA film is a thermosetting material: the lamination process activates the cross-linking of the molecules and as a consequence, the EVA film will not melt anymore when heated to high temperatures a second time after the curing because it is an irreversible process.

The cross-linking is carried out in order to improve the elongation, the rigidity, the aging and the heat resistance properties of the STRATO® EVA film.

The resulting characteristics of the crosslinked STRATO® EVA film are superior to the ones of a thermoplastic material such as PVB.

STRATO® FOR FURNITURE ELEMENTS

A key requirement of the internal glass elements is that they are safety elements, i.e. the sheets must be assembled using an EVA interlayer. Unlike normal tempered glass, even in the event of breakage it does not break into splinters and fragments: this is due to the action of the EVA interlayer which intervenes by keeping the layers of glass that surround it together.
In this case, the table was created by interspersing the two glass panes with STRATO® EXTRA CHIARO; moreover, it is increasingly in vogue to furnish by choosing transparency so as not to make the space heavier and to give elegance and refinement. Its high transparency also reflects the light creating pleasant effects and contrasts that make the whole thing brighter.
But there are an infinite number of possible solutions in addition to the EXTRA CHIARO: in fact, it is possible to choose other colours or finishes such as BLACK, LIGHT, SATINATED, MILK or WHITE and add fabric inserts, metal netting, coloured films, etc..
With STRATO® you can create personalised furnishing elements without neglecting the aspect of safety.

COMPARISON BETWEEN EVA AND PVB

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) film and Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) film are two different polymeric materials but both can be used for laminated glass.

PVB has been for many years the reference material for laminating glass in the building and transport industries but EVA has been gaining ground in recent years due to its properties which in some cases are better than PVB.

One of the main differences between EVA and PVB is the speed at which water vapour is transmitted, whether from natural water or atmospheric humidity. PVB is more sensitive and more exposed to problems such as water infiltration in the corners of laminated glass.

The chemical composition of the cross-linking of EVA allows the internal molecules to generate three-dimensional connections, thus ensuring an additional degree of protection for all architectural elements exposed to exceptional conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity and extreme weather conditions.

What are the advantages of EVA film?

Cross-linking rate > 94%*: EVA is thermo stable thermally and mechanically making it a material with a durability and stability well over any thermoplastic.

– Better optics: transparency values close to the extra clear glass.

– Better resistance to moisture: EVA is more resistant to moisture than PVB at open edge. PVB suffers a high degree of delamination at open edge, but EVA does not have such negative behavior.

– Excellent Soundproofing: given its high degree of soundproofing this is the ideal product for noisy areas.

– High UV filtering: the 99% of UV filtering at  370nm wavelength is an indication of its suitability to protect from sun beams.

– 3D Reticulation: can also reduce the number of layers in a tempered glass reaching a 50% reduction in manufacturing costs Vs an Autoclave.

– Lower processing costs: EVA laminated glass can be produced in convection (e.g. Lamijet Convection) or infrared lamination furnaces (e.g. Lamijet 04-2c); these furnaces are small and accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Processing with PVB film requires a special temperature-controlled chamber and the glass must then be processed in an autoclave, an expensive and large machine suitable for companies with large volumes.

WHAT IS A LAMINATED GLASS

What’s a laminated glass?

It is two or more panels of glass assembled together by means of one or more plastic interlayers of the same type, such as an EVA -based film that guarantees perfect adhesion to the glass and less damp absorption than the common PVB.

Laminating a glass means making it safe: in case of breakage, its splinters are not divided into multiple pieces that can be a serious danger to people.
